MOVE is more than a space. It’s a community kaupapa, dedicated to making dance, circus, acrobatics and many more movement practices accessible for all of Ōtautahi to enjoy.
A collective movement
MOVE grew from community aspirations shared in response to the Christchurch City Council’s post-quake ‘Share an Idea’ campaign, where our city made it clear there was a need for more public spaces for people to connect in creative ways. Now, after hard work behind the scenes and setting up artistic movement sessions around the city, our community’s vision of a central space to move and connect has come to life at Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre. Our collective origins remain at the heart of what we do. We offer public classes and workshops that make artistic movement accessible to all, partner with local organisations and provide residency and training opportunities for movement professionals.
Our vision
Inclusive and accessible
MOVE’s vision is to make artistic movement accessible to everyone, providing world-class facilities and welcoming newcomers into an inclusive environment where anyone can try something new safely. We support people to overcome barriers to participation – everyone who wants to move will have the opportunity to do so.
Sharing experience
MOVE provides specialist spaces and residency opportunities for movement professionals to develop their practice, create new works, or collaborate with others.
We can connect you with a range of knowledgable tutors, from experienced industry professionals to passionate local teachers.
Collective and collaborative
We work with partner organisations to design activities and programmes that work for their communities. MOVE believes in the power of collaboration to make artistic movement accessible to everyone.
Our space
Our home at Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre is unlike any other in Aotearoa, with three spacious studios designed for dance, circus and acrobatics and all forms of artistic movement.
