On the MOVE: what’s been happening behind the scenes

While we’ve been patiently waiting for the opening of the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre, MOVE has been partnering up with a number of movement artists throughout Ōtautahi to bring a diverse range of pilot projects to the community.

Our Speed Dancing classes have been a huge hit, with hundreds of people turning up to connect, try new things, push their boundaries and move in ways they haven’t before! Those that got sucked into the joy of moving for the simple sake of moving were able to continue with follow up classes held by the various tutors – with every class, our community has been growing!

Over the past year, we have supported a number of circus residencies, workshops and classes:

  • Teaching with Consent: Consent-Based Practice for Circus Tuition in Aotearoa, run in collaboration with The Dust Palace.
  • Safety Rigging Practices and Equipment Checks Workshop, run by YooCrew, with support from MOVE.
  • Circus Safe Workshop, run by ANZCA (Aotearoa New Zealand Circus Association) with support from MOVE.
  • A number of teaching progression classes of high level skills in aerial disciplines (including rope, silks and trapeze).

Through these collaborative courses, MOVE has been able to establish and strengthen our relationship with other circus communities nationwide, bringing closer our dream of transforming artistic movement, not just for Ōtautahi, but for the whole motu.

The community spaces throughout Ōtautahi have been wonderful spaces to host our classes and workshops… but we are so excited to have a space to call home, with purpose-built studios designed to make movement accessible for the whole community.
