Explore Breaking in Christchurch
Step into the world of breaking with Common Ground Crew, some of the best breakers in Aotearoa and a crew with two world championship titles under their belt.
The Breaking Foundations Programme provides a structured introduction to the foundations of breaking, giving dancers the knowledge, technique and confidence to develop their skills from their very first toprock through to their cleanest freeze.
Whether you’re completely new to breaking or looking to strengthen your foundations, this programme offers a supportive environment where you can learn from experienced breakers, develop your technique and discover your own style.
What to expect
The programme introduces the essential elements of breaking through progressive levels of learning and skill development.
You’ll explore:
Each skill is taught progressively, allowing you to build your knowledge and technique step by step. As you develop, the focus shifts towards refining your form, control, expression and individual movement style.
Progressive learning and the badge system
The Breaking Foundations Programme uses an exclusive badge system to track your progress through the different levels of mastery.
As you move through the programme, you’ll have opportunities to develop and refine your technique while working towards new skills and challenges. The progressive structure provides clear goals and encourages dancers to recognise their development along the way.
The aim isn’t simply to learn a collection of breaking moves. It’s to develop a strong foundation that gives you the confidence and skills to continue exploring the art form and create movement that is your own.
Who is this breaking class for?
This programme is designed for people who want to learn breaking from the foundations up, whether you’re taking your first steps into breakdance or want to strengthen your existing skills.
You don’t need to arrive knowing how to break. The programme introduces the essential foundations progressively, giving you time to develop your strength, coordination, technique and confidence.
Breaking can be physically challenging, but the learning process is designed to help you build your skills over time. You’ll be encouraged to challenge yourself, develop your own expression and enjoy the process of learning.
